How it works
Prop your phone. Start moving. That's it.
No wearables to charge, no sensors to strap on. Hughie's pose detection counts reps the moment you complete them — and a circuit program in live mode advances through every exercise and round on its own. Program structure follows published ACSM guidance for circuit format, exercise count, and session length, with rest periods adapted from NSCA circuit-recovery guidance for bodyweight training.
Prop up your phone
Prop your phone up in portrait or landscape, against a wall or water bottle, so the front camera can see your whole body — the app shows you when you're in frame. Most exercises face the camera; a few, like crunches and glute bridges, are filmed from the side, and the app shows you how to set up for each. A living room, bedroom, or hotel room is plenty of space.
Pick an exercise and go
Choose from 21 movements across Beginner, Intermediate, and Advanced — squats, push-ups, crunches, glute bridges, wall sits, and more. On-device pose detection counts each rep the moment you finish it while voice encouragement cheers you on. Run sets your way, or start a circuit program in live mode and it advances through every exercise and round on its own.
Keep the streak going
Every session is saved with set-by-set breakdowns, and your weekly streak grows each week you hit your goal. Reminders nudge you on the days you pick, a home screen widget shows how many days you've trained this week, and on Saturday Hughie checks in on how your week is going. Daily challenges and accessories for Hughie are a bonus on top.
Live demo
Watch Hughie count reps live
A real 40-second tracking session, unedited: the phone propped up and push-ups counted rep by rep as they happen while Hughie cheers — no tapping, no wearables, nothing to set up beyond getting where the camera can see you.
- Pose landmarks lock onto your body the moment you're in frame
- The rep count climbs the instant each push-up completes
- Set and session timers and a calorie estimate update live
Beyond the count
The parts that keep you honest
Counting reps is the hook. Staying consistent is the job — so Hughie measures what you did, shows it where you'll see it, and moves the target when you've earned it.
Your week, without opening the app
A widget on iOS and Android shows the days you've trained this week and your current weekly streak, so you know where you stand at a glance. When a week doesn't go to plan it never names the miss — showing up still counts. Included free.
Your rings close too
On iPhone, switch on Health export in Settings and your finished workouts go to Apple Health with an active energy estimate — crediting your Move and Exercise rings and showing up in Fitness. Write-only by design: Hughie asks for no read permission and never reads your health data. On Android, workouts and active calories go to Health Connect the same way.
How far you actually went
While the camera counts, it also measures how far through each rep you travelled, and shows it live. Half a squat and a full one stop looking the same on the way down. The meter is free wherever depth can be measured — it's part of counting, not a paid extra. Pro keeps the record and the trend.
Programs that adapt Pro
Targets rise when you clear them, not because it's Monday. Hit your targets two sessions in a row and the next session asks for more. Run out of runway at your level and Hughie says so instead of piling on volume.
Portrait or landscape
Turn the phone sideways and the whole app turns with it. A wide frame suits floor work — push-ups, planks, anything where you're longer than you are tall — and gives tablets a layout built for the shape they're actually held in.
Fix a count that's wrong
Lighting, framing and cameras vary, and no rep counter is perfect. If a set comes out wrong, tap it on the workout summary and correct the number before you save — the fix carries through your history, stats, streaks and challenges.

Questions people ask before downloading
Is there an app that counts push-ups automatically?
Yes. Hughie uses pose detection through your phone's front camera to count push-ups in real time — standard, knee, wall, and wide, all free with no limit. Prop your phone up, get in position, and every rep is counted and logged with no tapping and no wearables. Learn more →
How does camera rep counting actually work?
Hughie runs on-device pose detection that maps landmarks across your body — shoulders, elbows, hips, knees — and follows your movement to count each rep. If a set ever counts wrong, you can tap it on the summary and correct it before saving. Learn more →
Is camera-based workout tracking private?
Your camera video never leaves your phone, and it's never recorded. Pose detection on your phone finds points on your body in the video, like your shoulders, elbows, hips, and knees, and Hughie works only from those points. He saves your workout, including how deep each rep went and where your phone was placed, so he can track your progress. If you agree to AI data sharing, some workout data is sent to OpenAI to write your coach notes, programs, and chat replies. For coach notes, that includes the joint angles of each rep, worked out from those points. Your data isn't used to train AI models, and you can turn AI data sharing off anytime in Settings. Which exercises can Hughie track live?
21 exercises — 18 counted rep by rep, 3 timed holds (planks, knee planks, and wall sits). Beginner: jumping jacks, squats, wall push-ups, knee push-ups, side lunges, side bends, knee-to-elbow, crunches, glute bridges, calf raises, standing marches, knee planks, and wall sits. Intermediate adds push-ups, sumo squats, split squats, high knees, and planks. Advanced adds wide push-ups, squat jumps, and knee tuck jumps. Everything can be logged manually as well. Learn more →
Is Hughie free to use?
Yes, and it isn't a countdown. Every push-up — standard, knee, wall, and wide — and squats are camera-tracked free forever with no cap. Each of the other 16 exercises gets two free live tries that never expire, and new exercises are unlimited for their first week. Logging reps yourself is unlimited on everything. Voice encouragement, weekly streaks, daily challenges, the home screen widget, Apple Health and Health Connect export, the Muscles Worked body map, and one Hughie-built program are all included free. Learn more →
Can AI make me a workout plan for free?
You get one free Hughie-built program to try, and there's nothing new to fill in: Hughie already has your goal and experience level from onboarding and builds the program from those. Want something more specific? Describe it in your own words instead. Beyond that first program, more Hughie-built programs, Chat with Hughie, adaptive progression, and post-workout coach notes are Pro features. Learn more →
Does Hughie have a home screen widget?
Yes, on both iOS and Android, and it's free. It shows the days you've trained this week and your current weekly streak, so you know where you stand without opening the app.
Does Hughie sync with Apple Health?
Yes, on iPhone. Switch on Health export in Settings and your finished workouts are written to Apple Health as a workout with an active energy estimate, so they credit your Move and Exercise rings and show up in Fitness. It's write-only by design — Hughie asks for no read permission and never reads anything from Health. On Android, Hughie writes workouts and active calories to Health Connect the same way, also write-only.
Is there an app like Finch, but for working out?
Hughie borrows the companion idea for workouts: the camera counts your reps, voice encouragement cheers you on, and daily challenges earn coins for a small set of accessories for your puppy. The two are different apps, though: Finch is for self-care, and Hughie is for workouts. Learn more →
Do I need equipment or a gym?
No. Every tracked exercise is bodyweight-only. All you need is your phone propped where the camera can see your whole body, enough floor to move, and decent lighting. Learn more →
