How a camera squat counter works
Hughie's on-device pose detection maps your hips, knees, and ankles through the front camera and follows the movement — down into the squat, back up to standing, one rep, announced out loud. No wearable, no tapping, and nothing to strap to your leg.
Both standard squats and sumo squats are supported, so you can bias quads or hit your inner thighs and glutes with a wider stance — each tracked as its own exercise with its own history.
How to set up squat tracking in Hughie
- Position the camera so your full body is in frame — head to feet. A few feet of distance and decent lighting is all the AI needs.
- Choose Squats or Sumo Squats in a live session. Hughie confirms it can see you before the countdown starts.
- Squat. Reps are counted and announced as you go, so you can keep your eyes forward and your mind on moving instead of math.
- Check your history. Each session saves set-by-set breakdowns, duration, and calorie estimates, so you can watch your squat volume climb week over week.
Building a squat habit that sticks
Squats are the perfect daily-challenge exercise: no equipment, no floor space beyond where you're standing, and doable in two minutes. Hughie's daily challenges regularly feature squat targets that earn coins for accessories, and its AI program builder (one free program to try, unlimited with Pro) can construct a lower-body progression — squats, sumo squats, and jumping jacks — matched to your experience level.

Squat counter FAQ
What if a rep counts wrong?
Lighting and framing vary by phone, so it can happen. Tap the set on your workout summary and correct the count before saving — the correction carries through to all your stats and challenges. And if an exercise keeps miscounting on your device, report it in-app (Settings → Contact): reports go straight to the developer, and detector fixes ship fast.
Which camera does it use?
The front camera, always — that's by design, so the screen faces you and you can see the live count while you move. Just make sure your whole body is in frame, and stays in frame through the movement.
Do I need any equipment for squats?
No — Hughie is bodyweight-only by design. Squats and sumo squats need nothing but you, your phone propped where it can see your whole body, and the floor you're standing on.
